LCR stands for least cost routing, simply means a call routed at a lesser cost. Since the deregulation of the Telco market some years ago, BT set up BT Wholesale. BT Wholesale offered smaller Telco companies millions of BT minutes at far cheaper rates than members of the public were charged buying direct from BT. These companies having smaller operating overheads than BT, could then sell these minutes back to the public at a price far cheaper than companies could buy direct from BT saving the customers money as well as making a small profit themselves. Telco companies placed 4 digit figures in front of the number you would dial as a means of identifying with the BT exchange what company the call was re-routed through. Telco companies then provided diallers you plugged into the BT socket programmed with the 4 digit pre-fix to save customers the hassle of dialling the pre-fix themselves. This practice is now largely outdated since carrier pre-select came into force in April 2002. Carrier Pre-Select means carrier of your service is pre-selected digitally at the BT exchange requiring nothing more than a 12day notice period, no hardware is required on site! Businesses realise more and more how crucial reducing operating overheads has become, and LCR plays an important role in cutting running costs down to a bare minimum without sacrificing quality or service.
