Google Ranking
Google-ranking
You can achieve great results by concentrating initially on appearing and ranking in Google – it has a high percentage (50% in the US) of the search engine audience and the techniques that work well in Google also work well in the other search engines.
There is a published algorithm on how Google works – called the PageRank algorithm.
The basic principle is that each web page that links to your page contributes a score towards Google's total score of your page -- the more inbound links you have, the higher your score. However, the score you receive from an inbound link depends on both the score of the page that links to you, and on the similarity in content of the source and destination pages of the link.
For example, the BBC website has a very high Google score, so a link from there to the @UK Company Formations page would contribute a large score to the @UK Company Formations page. However, the score would be higher from a news article about Companies House, say, than from an article about flooding in Berkshire because of the greater degree of similarity in page content.
You also get more points for links from more ‘relevant’ sites – ie if Companies House linked to our page on Company Formation, then that would be a better ‘inbound link’ than one from a personal website about rabbits.
Tip: The more ‘quality’ links to your site the better
