Fire Legislation

Fire Legislation
Fire safety in the workplace is the employer’s responsibility, as it always has been in the UK.

1st October 2006 is a key date – the new law comes into effect – and you MUST comply.

The new law affects you if you are:

  • Responsible for business premises
  • An Employer
  • Self employed with a business premises
  • A charity or voluntary organisation
  • A contractor with a degree of control over any premises.

However, the long-established practice of the local authority issuing (or otherwise) a Fire Certificate following a regular inspection visit by the Fire Service has now ceased. The obligatory Fire Certificate has now been replaced by the equally obligatory employer’s fire safety risk assessment.

In order to maintain the existing standards set by the expert Fire Service inspections, a practiced level of expertise in fire safety is required; this expertise is sometimes not available in commercial and industrial organisations due to organisational pressures and resource limitations.

TAS are able to provide a cost-effective fire safety service which encompasses fire safety risk assessments and recommendations for fire safety improvements (if required). The following topics would all receive consideration during the process:

  • Building structure and fabric.
  • Sources of ignition.
  • Detection and alarm systems.
  • Fire fighting equipment.
  • Fire safety equipment maintenance and testing schedules and records.
    Staff training.
  • PAT testing schedules.
  • Fire water run-off provisions.
  • Provision for any disabled persons.
  • Fire walls.
  • Emergency lighting installation.
  • Fire safety signage.
  • Fire escapes.
  • Travel distances.
  • Location and control of any waste skips.

  • Emergency lighting maintenance and testing schedules.
  • Final exit doors.
  • Number of people present.
  • Shift work & out-of-hours work.
