Fire Legislation
1st October 2006 is a key date – the new law comes into effect – and you MUST comply.
The new law affects you if you are:
- Responsible for business premises
- An Employer
- Self employed with a business premises
- A charity or voluntary organisation
- A contractor with a degree of control over any premises.
However, the long-established practice of the local authority issuing (or otherwise) a Fire Certificate following a regular inspection visit by the Fire Service has now ceased. The obligatory Fire Certificate has now been replaced by the equally obligatory employer’s fire safety risk assessment.
In order to maintain the existing standards set by the expert Fire Service inspections, a practiced level of expertise in fire safety is required; this expertise is sometimes not available in commercial and industrial organisations due to organisational pressures and resource limitations.
