| SUSSEX LOWLAND SEARCH & RESCUE ‘We do this so that others may live’
Last year in Sussex alone 2102 people were reported missing.
12 Are still unaccounted for today !
Sussex Lowland Search and Rescue (SusSAR) was created in 2002 as a response to an enquiry from the Association of Lowland Search And Rescue teams (ALSAR) chairman, for the need for a SAR team in Sussex to provide a voluntary professional search and rescue service. We are currently seeking probationary status from ALSAR, and hoping to go operational within the year.
The need for a rapid response professional voluntary organisation within Sussex was highlighted by the tragic disappearance of Sarah Payne on 1st July 2000. The search operation organised following the disappearance of Sarah brought to light a number of issues in the use of search volunteers drawn from the general public:
•the use of members of the public is often difficult to organise and control •the volunteers have no equipment or experience of SAR •the volunteers require a high level of police supervision •the number of volunteers at each incident is unpredictable •there is no control of the ‘quality’ of the volunteers (i.e. age, ability, criminal record)
The formation of a dedicated search and rescue team was intended to address these issues and provide a reliable, specialised service to assist Sussex Police or act as a standalone operation in the search for missing persons.
The team is funded by donations provided by members of the public, charities, voluntary organisations, local groups and businesses.
SusSAR , ultimately, will have greater than twenty civilian volunteers who are split between the main SAR team group, who specialise in basic foot search techniques; and a specialist mountain bike team. SusSAR will be able to act as an entirely self sufficient search and rescue team who specialise in advanced SAR techniques, SAR management, ground searches, and First Aid. All volunteers must meet rigorous standards and undergo constant training.
If you require assistance in the case of a mission person please contact the Police directly.
If you would like to volunteer your time as an operational or support member with SusSAR please contact Steve Cranswick, SAR Co-ordinator, on 07901 716902.
