Located near to St Bart’s on the Barking Road - The Hartley Centre runs a community housing and employment training project and youth club. Historically, (and because of the many years of long standing mutual relationship and close working partnership with the Parish, particularly at St Bart’s), the Team Rector/Incumbent has had responsibility for Chairing the Centre’s Management Committee, and this continues.
The Church Army, a church of England organisation, has operated from the Hartley Centre since 1911. In 2004 this was taken over by The Renewal Programme to take the work of the Centre forward in this Millennium. The building continues to be owned by the Church Army but it is hoped that a joint partnership arrangement with The Renewal Programme and the London Borough of Newham will enable the purchase of the Centre during the next two years.
The Centre is responsible, through a Management Committee to its parent body The Renewal Programme.
The Centre is used by an average of 1,000 or more users every week, and many of these would never enter a church, but they come to the Centre and are brought into touch with things that really count in their lives.
The Centre is well equipped with recreational facilities such as a gymnasium Equipped for karate, modern and classical dancing practiceas well as aerobics work-outs, a very large hall that seat 150 people for hire, changing rooms with hot and cold showers. A well equipped educational facility in the form of classrooms with an up to date Computer Suite, a seminar room as well as a Youth Section manned by qualified and trained youth workers.
