St Bartholomew's Church

Meetings in Taizé

Welcoming others has been an essential part of Taizé’s vocation ever since Brother Roger arrived in the village in 1940. At that time, during the Second World War, it was mainly refugees, among them Jews, fleeing because of the war, who were offered hospitality in his home.

Since 1957-58, it is mainly young adults from many countries who have been welcomed in ever-greater numbers. They come from all the countries of Europe and from the other continents too, to take part in weeklong meetings centred on inner life and human solidarity.

Since the 1989 opening of the frontiers between East and West, the numbers of young adults from Eastern Europe have increased steadily. From 1962, the Community had maintained close relationships – often very discreetly – with Christians in the countries of Eastern Europe.

Young people from Africa, Asia and South America also take part; for periods of up to three months. They come to share with the others how the faith is lived out in their own countries and cultures.
At certain times of the year, families from different countries come with their children to spend a week together, in prayer and meeting.

In recent years, the summer months have seen three to six thousand young adults arrive each week, coming from as many as eighty different countries at one time. Three times a day, everyone gathers in the Church of Reconciliation for a time of prayer together. On Friday evenings, the icon of the Cross is placed in the centre of the Church and those who wish can come and pray around the cross in silence, as a way of entrusting to God their own burdens and those of others. The Saturday evening prayer is a vigil of the Resurrection, a festival of light.

For an in-depth impression of what the meetings are like, see our page on last summer in Taizé. The other pages in this section contain practical information on the meetings for young people: from 16 to 17 and from18 to 29; for young families; for adults of 30 and over; as well as essential reading for people preparing to bring a group of young people to Taizé. Once you have consulted the pages that concern you, you can register on line.
