SYNODICAL GOVERNMENT
A SYNOD is a Council for debate or government, & the word itself means coming to a common mind.
It may operate as the churches’ local:
— Forum for ideas
— Pressure Group
— Exchange of resources
— Government
— Place of Fellowship
In 1970 the Church of England adopted this system of government with a view to taking more seriously the views & role of the laity.
This system operates at these levels:
PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL
DEANERY SYNOD
DIOCESAN SYNOD
GENERAL SYNOD
Each tier of church government may discuss affairs appropriate to its particular level, & may also discuss motions & reports referred to it from other levels.
The DEANERY SYNOD meets at least three times a year.
Deanery Synod members elect people onto the Diocesan Synod.
So Synodical Government is a two-way passage for
* Information * Views * Guidance * Motions * Reports * Causes for concern
With responsibility to decide:
• Changes in Church (Canon) Laws
• Practices
There are two parts to a DEANERY SYNOD:
THE HOUSE OF CLERGY - (about 30 members), made up of all Licensed and retired Clergy in the Deanery.
THE HOUSE OF LAITY - (about 40 members), elected at the annual meetings of the parishes, every third year. Readers may also be elected to serve on the House of Laity. The number each Parish can elect is determined by the number on its Electoral Roll.
Within the Deanery Synod the officers are appointed as follows:
The Area Dean & Assistant Area Dean are appointed by the Diocesan Bishop after consultation with all the Clergy & the Lay members of the Standing Committee, for five-year terms of office.
The Lay Chair is elected by the House of Laity at the start of each three-year cycle.
The Secretary & Treasurer are elected by the whole Synod at the start of each three-year cycle.
Each member should have a copy of the DEANERY SYNOD MEMBERS HANDBOOK. Retiring members are asked to pass these green booklets on to their successors. Meetings are kept as informal as possible so that members can feel free to take part in debates & discussions.
To help with its work, the Deanery Synod elects:
The Deanery Committee exists to:
• prepare agendas & business for synod meetings
• carry out any instructions of the synod
• advise the diocese on certain matters, e.g. the grading of Parishes for Family Purse (Parish quota) assessment.
• recommend to the Diocese suggestions about organisation within the deanery to further the mission of the church, e.g., church buildings, clergy appointments, Parish boundaries, team & group ministries, local ecumenical projects, etc.
• approve and comment on applications from within the deanery for money from the Church Urban Fund, & related grant giving trusts.
* PLEASE NOTE IF YOUR CHURCH WISHES TO MAKE AN APPLICATION FOR A GRANT FROM ANY OF THESE FUNDS, THEN INITIAL ADVICE, INSTRUCTIONS AND FORMS SHOULD BE OBTAINED FROM REV’D JEREMY ALLCOCK, ASSISTANT AREA DEAN at (020) 8552 9955. mailto:jem6@aol.com
This Committee, elected every three years, is made up of
* the Deanery Officers * six Clergy & six Lay Members.

The Newham Deanery Choir:
The Newham Deanery Choir meets once a month at St. Margaret and All Saints Church, Barking Road, from 3.00 - 5.00 pm with refreshments after so that people from different parishes can socialise. Meetings are more frequent when rehearsing for a special event.
There are 36 regular members: 20 Sopranos, 10 Altos, 4 Tenors and 1 Bass; there are also some members who turn up as they can. The Conductor is Margaret Elson, and Helen Coleman is the Choir Organiser.
Each Priest in the Deanery has been asked to allow the Choir to sing in their Church at least once a year, perhaps for a special occasion. The aim is to support Parish Choirs and music, not to take it over. The Choir does not sing at Sunday morning masses because most members have responsibilities in their own Parishes.
If you would like further information about the Choir please contact:
