St Bartholomew's Church

The annual seasonal Night Shelter, (including here through the Parish of East Ham • Night Shelter), undertaken for 10 years has ceased with the view of the main project working towards a permenant all-year-round Night Shelter in the Borough.

It has become increasingly difficult to replace Churches and this could jeopardise the future of Night Shelter, albeit that the closure of those Churches who were still able to help in many ways broke links and networks which was sad and unfortunate and a significant loss to the Project. A decision is imminently needed and any tangible help to achieve this would be valued.

However, we continues at the Centre to support homeless people on a regular basis and make provisions available for those who come into our Centre on a daily basis, including food, sustenance, and refreshments and refer onto other suitable Agencies we have networks with. Help to continue this invaluable work is also appreciated and gratefully received.

Donations of goods or produce would be equally welcomed and valued. To give an indication of the type of things we need a list is given below for guidance.

Food & Produce:-

Non-perishable foods & Items - Suitable to make/provide quick snacks,, (as opposed 'fresh food produce'), for ingredients to use in sandwiches, e.g. tin luncheon meat, cornbeef, pot noodles, etc.

A word about certain tin foods: Such is the kind generosity of people that we annually find ourselves with far too many tins of certain items surplus at the end of each season, i.e. canned beans and tomatoes. Given the enormous quantities left over each and every season, (owing to ‘use-by’ dates), volumes are wasted. For want of truly valuing ALL contributions received and not wishing to seem unappreciative, we are therefore please asking those who are thinking of contributing to help by excluding these items, from the Harvest Festivals and other occasions, i.e. NO TIN FOODS EXCEPT for the above to use in making sandwiches etc.

No Fresh Food produce please! However, items such as sugar; coffee, tea, washing-up liquid; food surface cleaning liquid; powder milk; large tin foil; and J-cloths are welcome.

PLEASE REMEMBER – Avoid sending any homeless person indiscriminately to any Night Shelter before first making contact with the shelter. It is appreciated that this is often frustrating and sometimes difficult. However, sending an exhausted homeless person, (perhaps from one side of London to another – in hope), only for them to arrive to be told that it is not open, or they are full, potentially has far more ramifications and psychological damage to a person already suffering. For further information, or details about Night Shelter in Newham, telephone Joan at Turnaround direct on: (020) 7511 8377. Out of hours contact No: 07944 637 270.
