Health in Our Neighbourhood
The East Ham neighbourhood is the second largest neighbourhood in Newham with a total of 15,528 households. It is the centre for the LBN administration with the Town Hall located there. Its eastern boundary is with Ilford.
With a total number of 22 GP principles, the average number of households per GP is 705. There are 10 GP premises, 7 of which are below standard.
East Ham has some of the best health outcome data for the whole borough with below national average deaths from cancer and heart disease and standard mortality ratios being generally below the Newham average.
The exception to this is a strip running all along the southern boundary of the neighbourhood where emergency admissions for all ages is higher than the Newham average as are respiratory disease admissions and cancer admissions. The general standard mortality ratio is below the Newham average, although the same strip has an average score. This strip does not reflect the pattern of the index of local deprivation.
There is a Community Mental Health Team based in the neighbourhood and the PCT also own a property in the neighbourhood used as team base for Health Visitors.
25% of GPs in the area will be approaching retirement in 2004.
