Everyone will need a birth certificate, marriage certificate or death certificate at some time or other. This section gives you information about how registration takes place in England and Wales and where you can get copies of certificates.

The general registration of births, marriages and deaths started in 1837. A central copy of all registrations is held by the General Register Office (GRO) and a central index is held at the Family Records Centre (FRC) in London. Local Offices hold records of and indexes to events registered in their area since 1837.

For recent events registered within the last 18 months, applications for certificates should be made to the Register Office where the birth, death or marriage took place.

The original registration records are not open to the public but you can get copies of the entries of events registered in England and Wales in the form of a birth certificate, marriage certificate and death certificates.

You can order certificates online or click on the appropriate link below to download an application form in pdf format via the web site at:-

You will need Adobe Acrobat 'Reader' or a 'pdf' compatible viewer in order to read the Application form. You can download Adobe Acrobat 'Reader', free, (which will enable you to read the document(s) but not write/fill-in), at:-

The births, marriages and deaths of British Citizens overseas are also held by the GRO. These include events registered at British Consulates, British High Commissions and some records registered by the armed forces. In some instances these records go back further than 1837. Central indexes to these records are kept at the FRC.

Legal adoptions started in 1927. These are held by the GRO in its base in Southport. Indexes to adoptions are kept in the FRC.

You can obtain certificates of birth, marriages and deaths in any of the following ways:

* In person from the Family Records Centre (FRC)
* By Post, telephone or fax
* Locally from the register office where the event was originally registered

You can also get information about the following:
