My Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus

by A.F. Mummery

First published in 1895, A.F. Mummery's book is acknowledged as one of the greatest mountaineering books ever written.

Mummery is one of the great Victorian climbers. He left behind a legacy of some very fine climbs - unusually for the times, he put up first ascents of difficult routes; on peaks that had already been climbed.

Mummery was one of the first to realise that it wasn't important how many peaks you bagged, but in what style you did it. He shamelessly confesses his (then) unorthodox views: As a consequence of this terrible weakness, I have been no less than seven times on top of the Matterhorn.

These were pivotal times in the development of mountaineering and Mummery's book is an absolute classic. Very well-written, with great passion and a wry sense of humour; his stories of his climbs with Norman Collie, Cecil Slingsby and the great Alpine guide Alex Burgener are enough to rekindle anyone's interest in the mountains.

The bottles of Bouvier were seemingly as important a part of the mountaineer's equipment than a stout Alpine Club rope!

If you have never bought a Mountaineering book from www.RippingYarns.com before, then I would strongly advise you to make it this one.
