What Happens If You Die Without Making A Will?

When someone dies without a Will their estate (all their assets and belongings) are distributed according to the laws governing intestacy. This may not be what you would have wished to happen.
In any event it is likely to take longer to finalise than if you had made a Will. A family can suffer acute financial hardship because of the delays in dealing with the estate of a person who has no Will. These delays can often run in to years.

 Parent ~ Who would you wish to look after your offspring? This is particularly important in the case of single or unmarried parents. A Will nominating guardians is invaluable! Otherwise, Social Services & the Courts may decide your children’s future! Remember - godparents are not guardians.

 Married ~ Do not assume that your surviving spouse will get everything! Brothers, sisters, parents & children may have a claim. Bank accounts may be frozen & insurance money delayed. A family can suffer financial hardship & these delays can run in to years…

 Cohabiting ~ If you are living as a couple but not officially married, the surviving partner may not get anything at all (including your home)

 Retired ~ Update existing Will to included additional grandchildren or deletion of persons you no longer feel you wish to leave anything to.

All of the above can be avoided simply by making a Will, it only takes between one / two hours of your time. Always remember, accidents & illness have absolutely no respect for age!
