K20 Performance Tuning Parts and Technology.

The newest engine in the Honda tuning community. The 'K Series' is Honda's mass produced version of the roller rocker valve train assembly found in the S2000. Less friction, more rpm potential, faster action cam profiles...this engine has untapped potential. First introduced in the JDM Integra Type-R in 2001, this engine put out a respectable 220HP @ 8000 rpm straight from the factory (DC5). The K20A also sees service in the JDM Civic Type-R, using the same compression and cam profiles. The first USDM production model was the K20A2 found in the 02-04 RSX-S. Other engines featuring the same head configuration include the K24A2 (TSX) that features a 9.114' deck height, the K20Z1 in the 05-06 RSX-S that includes various JDM Type-R add-ons like cams, throttle bodies, higher compression and Honda's answer to the tuning crowd, the K20Z3 found in the 2006-up Civic Si.

K20A / K20Z Stroker Kits (2.2L, 2.35L or 2.6L)
The BC stroker kit for the Honda/Acura K Series engine platform incorporates the wider B16A bearing (.935' width) that offers more surface area than the .740' width bearing found in the OEM K Series crank and rod combination. The added surface area increases bearing life, especially at extended rpm. Note: This kit requires custom connecting rods (modified BE bore and BE width).

For use with our new line of single lobe camshafts for the Honda K Series, Ferrea aluminum roller rockers drop 50% off the weight of each rocker compared to the steel Honda OEM rocker assembly. K20A / K20Z VALVE GUIDES
BC premium valves guides are made from Manganese Silicon Aluminum Bronze alloy and CNC machined to exacting tolerances. BC guides are resistant to cracking and corrosion, while reducing friction and insures high lubrication even at elevated engine temperatures and rpm's. The perfect replacement to worn or damaged guides and 100% compatible with BC's lineup of stainless steel valves.

K20A / K20Z Valve Keepers / Locks
7° billet performance valve stem keepers or locks are designed to fit BC retainers (BC2010 and BC2011). Precision machined from premium billet bar stock chromoly steel and heat treated for maximum strength to insure against shoulder shearing (common with stock and lesser quality brands).

K20A / K20Z Stainless Steel Valves
BC valves are one piece design with a friction welded Stellite tip for the best possible performance. Every valve is made from premium grade, heat resistant stainless steel material to insure reliability with high boost and/or high rpm applications. The undercut stem above the head area not only reduces overall weight for extended rpm potential, but also significantly improves air/fuel flow in and out of the combustion chamber. Every valve is fully machined and features a swirl polished finish under the head.

Crankshafts
BC crankshafts are made from the finest, aerospace grade 4340 steel billet material. CNC machined on state of the art, 5 axis Mazak Integrex 300-IV CNC machines to exacting tolerances (.0001'). Every crankshaft features large radius journals that add rigidity for high horsepower, high boost, high rpm applications. Gun drilled, CNC ground oil holes feature a smooth surface for extra oiling, tear dropped for added oil scoop, cross drilled for priority main feeding to the rods and micro polished to a mirror finish for optimum bearing lubricity. All cranks are stress relieved, shot peened, magna flux inspected and nitrided (multi step heat treatment) for ultimate performance. Fully profiled counterweights are designed for reduced windage through the crankcase creating less oil resistance for better rpm potential.

Connecting Rods
BC connecting rods are CNC machined from aerospace grade 4340 steel billet, available in your choice of the European influenced H beam or the traditional I beam design (certain applications). All rods feature a deep, double ribbed cap that keeps the big end housing bore true at extended rpm and insures uniform bearing crush, delivering proper clearances for superior oil supply and maximum load carrying capacity. H Beam rods feature a deep radial groove pin bushing and oil holes at 5 and 7 o'clock (the beam acts as a trough), bringing critical lubrication to the critical wrist pin area. I Beam rods feature a oil hole at the 12 o'clock position that keep the pin end bore true at high boost. Available in your choice of ARP2000 fasteners (rated to 210,000 psi) or the ultimate faster, ARP's Custom Age 625+ (rated to 280,000 psi).

Pistons
Choose from the top piston brands available... CP or JE... in any desired bore size and compression ratio. Both brands make their custom BC stroker pistons from 2618 T6 high tensile strength forged aluminum forgings. These forgings are computer designed for strength and minimum weight. Each piston dia is CNC machined to assure optimal accuracy and superior grain flow in the forging process. 3D modeling software and rigorous Finite Element Analysis insure that your pistons are manufactured to the strongest and lightest part possible for your application. Your custom pistons feature tighter clearances, less noise, better ring seal and overall better durability. Standard features include pin fit, carbon steel wrist pins and spiral locks or rail supports depending on application. Added features include upgraded 9310 alloy wrist pins for reduced flex, lateral gas ports to assist in ring seal, skirt and top coatings and lightweight design.

    Head Studs
    ARP uses premium grade 8740 alloy that is heat treated to 200,000 p.s.i. This procedure ensures complete heat penetration and the results are far superior to those lesser quality studs from other manufacturers who just dump pieces in a basket and hope for the best. Following heat treat, each stud is centerless ground to make it as close to perfectly concentric as possible. This procedure involves about ten very slight cuts and results in an exceptionally straight part. ARP studs are thread rolled after heat treat which gives them about 1000% better fatigue strength than studs that are threaded prior to heat treat (a very common industry practice). It costs more to do it this way because it’s tough on tooling but the results are well worth the extra effort.

     

    Main Studs
    ARP main studs eliminate main cap walk and fretting as well as protecting the threads in your engine block. All kits come complete with hardened parallel-ground washers and high quality nuts. Manufactured from 8740 chromoly steel, heat-treated in house to 200,000 p.s.i. tensile strength and precision J-form threads rolled after heat treat to create a fastener that has threads 1000% stronger than OEM produced studs. A must for high horsepower, high rpm engine applications.

    K20A / K20Z BC GASKETS
    BC gaskets are made in Japan and deliver the ultimate sealing capability even at extreme boost pressures. Individual die cut layers of stainless steel with superior consistency compared to other leading gaskets. These inferior brands are constructed with too high profile of beads which is prone to fatigue, losing the spring effect in a relatively short period of time and consistency of sealing pressure, resulting in leakage. BC gaskets are pre-coated stainless steel with a 0.2 micron consistent layer of Nitrile rubber that completely fills the cylinder head surface. Even a newly resurfaced cylinder head and/or block has a surface finish or roughness between 10 to15 microns and this Nitrile rubber completely seals the surfaces at operating engine temperatures, unlike the FKM type which is not suitable for filling the surface roughness because the material has too high of heat resistance. Basically the FKM does not melt to fill into the surface roughness providing the proper seal.

    BC offers an I-Beam style connecting rod for those who prefer that traditional design over the H Beam style. The I-Beam is a proven configuration that is very popular among the forced induction crowd.     K20A / K20Z Sportsman Connecting Rods
    Although the name implies that the Sportsman is a 2nd tier part, the Sportsman incorporates every feature of the premier BC625+ rod, only that the fasteners have been changed to the more economical, yet venerable ARP2000 bolt, rated to 220,000 p.s.i. The Sportsman is rated in excess of 200HP per cylinder and priced for the everyday performance buff.

    K20A / K20Z BC625+ Connecting Rods
    The BC625+ rod from BC is the premier industry connecting rod. Incorporating ARP's ultimate fastener, the Custom Age 625+, rated to 280,000 p.s.i., the BC625+ delivers the ultimate clamping ability at high horsepower and rpm.     Skunk2's new cutting-edge composite fuel rails are made using our proprietary carbon impregnated aerospace thermo-polymer composite. This material insulates the fuel from both radiant and conductive heat transfer under the hood. Keeping the fuel cooler results in an increase in horsepower and torque. We have seen power gains of up to 2% in real world testing. Skunk2 composite fuel rails feature a large 0.625' internal bore with radius inlets to the injectors thus improving flow characteristics. This type of radius injector inlet design is not possible with extruded and drilled aluminum fuel rails (which have sharp angles internally where the main bore meets the injector bores). Skunk2 fuel rails can be used with factory fuel lines and fuel regulators and also includes provisions for aftermarket fuel pressure gauges and additional attachments.

    Skunk2’s Pro Series Intake Manifold for Honda’s K-series has arrived. Skunk2 engineers looked to the popular RBC intake manifold for inspiration and went back to the drawing board.

  • Skunk2’s Pro Series Intake Manifold for Honda’s K-series features a larger plenum and shorter, oversized runners when compared to the RBC, and is cast with thicker wall material, leaving room for further porting for high-horsepower applications. Instead of producing a manifold with a significantly oversized plenum and excessively short runners that would sacrifice mid-range power.

  • The Pro Series manifold was designed for the “street enthusiast” who wants more power but doesn’t want to sacrifice mid-range performance to get it. The results are improved airflow, an enhanced venturi effect, and both mid-range and top-end power gains.

  • Skunk2’s all-new, cast-aluminum Pro Series Intake Manifold for Honda’s K-series is a direct-fit replacement for all K20/K24 engines ('06 Civic Si application coming soon) thanks to its unique, patent-pending water neck design and throttle body flange, which is compatible with OEM throttle bodies as well as those as large as 76mm. The special water neck design eliminates the cutting that would otherwise be involved with some RBC applications and the supplied thermal-insulated intake manifold gasket makes for a truly bolt-on installation (no drilling or modifying required).

  • Pro Series manifolds also incorporate an angled-runner design, which allows for ample hood clearance on ’88-’00 Civics and ’90-’01 Integras with K-series engine swaps, as well as additional core support clearance.

  • Pro Series Intake Manifolds offer horsepower and torque gains greater than the popular RBC manifold but without compromising mid-range power output. The design incorporates runners that are similar in length to the RBC’s but with larger bores, a special tapered design, as well as a larger, tapered plenum that together preserve mid-range power but increase and accelerate airflow to allow for significant top-end power gains.

  • Pro Series Intake Manifold runner exits are also machined and hand-finished to best match the cylinder head’s ports. Skunk2’s Pro Series Intake Manifold’s shape and design also increases wave scavenging effects at the engine’s ideal operating range, which allow for a broad increase in usable power.

    There are two basic ways to destroy your K-series powerplant, mis-shifting your gear selection causing the engine to over rev, and oil starvation. Oil starvation may occur because you may neglect to attain correct oil fill levels but you can also experience oil starvation when you pull high lateral g's going around corners. This is called oil surge and occurs when the oil pump pickup is not feed with enough oil typically when the oil moves in the direction opposite to the turn usually on right hand bends. This item is proven to prevent surge in corners up to 1.8g's and is an essential modificaton if you track race or drive with any zeal.

    H-BEAM DESIGN
    Universally accepted as the industry standard throughout the racing community, incorporates the proven H Beam rod design. This design delivers structural integrity, sound design and peace of mind when testing the outer limits of horsepower, torque and engine rpm. Adding to the design characteristics, our engineers employed a radial beam design that removes excess weight from non-critical stress areas while making the beam design even stronger than the conventional straight beam design.

    DOUBLE RIBBED CAP
    Our rod features a deep, double ribbed cap that keeps the big end housing bore of the connecting rod true at extended rpm and during severe-duty, high horsepower use. This feature also insures uniform rod bearing crush, delivering proper clearances for superior oil supply and maximum load carrying capacity.

    WRIST PIN OIL HOLES
    Every connecting rod incorporates wrist pin oil holes at 5 and 7 o'clock. These pin oiling holes deliver critical lubrication to the wrist pin area for proper pin and pin bushing wear resistance and galling. The H-Beam design acts as a trough that runs oil along the sides of the beam, force feeding oil into the chamfered holes and around the grooved pin bushing.

    GROOVED PIN BUSHING
    Our rods employ a unique aluminum/silicone/bronze bushing that features a .120' wide x .040' deep radial groove in the bushing that delivers even more oil to the critical wrist pin/rod bushing area. This groove is force fed oil through the two strategically machined oil holes positioned at 5 and 7 o'clock for superior lubrication.

    FASTENERS
    BC rods are available in your choice of two fasteners or rod bolt options. Both are made from ARP, the industry standard for fastener technology. The bROD employs the ARP2000 bolts, the venerable fastener of choice for most connecting rod manufacturers and rated to 210,000 p.s.i. and up to 200 horsepower per cylinder. The BC 625+ rod incorporates ARP's highest grade fastener, the Custom Age 625+ bolt rated to 280,000 p.s.i. and in excess of 300 horsepower per cylinder. Use this option when only the best rod on the market will do.

    We offer several forged conrod options which include High strength forced induction rods, Forged rods for Naturally Aspirated High Reving Race Engines and High End Super Strength Extreme Duty rods with ultra strength rod bolts made from 280,000psi tensile steel. Our rods are race proven and wont let you down. The BC625+ rod from BC is the premier industry connecting rod. Incorporating ARP's ultimate fastener, the Custom Age 625+, rated to 280,000 p.s.i., the BC625+ delivers the ultimate clamping ability at high horsepower and rpm.
