Integrated Transformation from Imaginist

Assessment demonstrator - Step 4

Putting it all together

Now you have identified your organisation's management culture and process capability. You also have a complexity factor for your project.

Now we can put these all together.

First we combine the management culture and process capability scores to indicate a composite Organisational Capability.

For example, an organisation with an Aligned management culture and and a process capability at Level 3, will have a Medium organisational capability, as shown in the table:

This provides a useful baseline for an organisation to assess its capability to manage change and how successful it will be in introducing cross-department systems and processes.

Now lets look at the project complexity in relation to this organisaitonal capability. We can do this by taking the combined Organisational Capability value (High/Medium/Low) and plotting it against the Complexity factor (Simple/Not Simple/Complex/Too Complex) as the two axes of a simple chart.

In the example below, a complex project is shown in the context of a Medium organisational capability.

Green: go ahead

Amber: the project is probably too complex for the organisation, or you haven’t resourced it adequately – either will have an impact on expected benefits.

Red: Stop! Your will project will not succeed. Analyse where the problems lie and re-plan.

Conclusion

This demonstrator showed how three of the INPACT models and tools can be used to measure the impact of the barriers to success on your project business case.

Obviously, in a real application, we would look in a lot more detail at the three key aspects of a change project: the organisation’s management culture and process capability, the complexity of the project and any other significant factors, such as dependency on external stakeholders. We would then gather other information that would impact on implementation and benefits, such as levels of trust and accountability.

The final conclusions would be set out in a structured report, showing how the barriers to success would impact on your business case costs, timescales and benefits.

We would then recommend that this assessment is workshopped through with senior stakeholders in order to ensure that the necessary measures were included in planning the project.
