Habits of Mind for learning
A vital dimension to teaching thinking is the development of dispositions such as persistence, inquisitiveness, reflectiveness and the willingness to consider the views of others. Some researchers view these dispositions or 'habits of mind' as even more important than thinking 'skills' in the campaign to increase the learning power of pupils. However, until now it is an area that has been woefully neglected.
The Habits of Mind series of four books, edited by Athur Costa and Bena Kallick, and imported from America for British teachers by Imaginative Minds Ltd, is a practical guide to developing habits of mind for thinking in schools.
The books are published by the American Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development (ASCD) - a prestigious professional body leading the way in US curriculum innovation. In addition, we have imported from the Association a passionate argument by John Barell for enhancing the curiosity of students through habits of mind and questioning skills.
