| Griffin Research Organisation
| | | Griffin Research is a non profit organisation based in Lincolnshire, England. We provide a historical manuscript research service to persons worldwide who own a United Kingdom feudal barony or Manor. Griffin Research possess a continuously expanding and comprehensive document archive.
Founded by a Manor owner, for the benefit of Barony and Manor owners. We at Griffin understand how time consuming and difficult it can be to obtain information, especially for owners who reside outside the United Kingdom.
Documents specific to Baronies (Scotland) and Manors (England and Wales) are not usually permitted to leave the UK, and are often kept at the Local Public Record Office located nearest to the Barony or Manor in question.
Documents which are held by the public record office are very well kept and are available, usually free of charge, for inspection at the office by the public. The intended viewer must register as a public researcher at the record office prior to obtaining documents for inspection at the office. There is no charge for registration, but you should check with your relevant record office to ascertain what documentation they require you to bring with you, when you visit the office to register. A Record Office will usually employ at least one rearcher. This researcher is on site and will be familiar with the archive. A record office employed researcher can be instructed by the public at a fee. Instructing a record office researcher can be an excellent option especially so if you can provide a clear instruction as to what it is you are seeking the researcher to achieve. Instructions such as; obtain names of past owners, or the date of a past conveyance or trust. These offices possess tens of thousands of documents, often obtained by donation from descendants of the owners of the large estates. It is not uncommon to discover that these estates were often formed by at least ten manors. Record offices possess documents not just specific to manors within their district but also any other subject of historical value. A record office district can cover a vast area containing a large number of manors, therefore do not be surprised if there is a waiting list for research to be carried out. We recommend you contact your relevant local record office for information of the range of services available and fees.
To our knowledge Griffin Research is the only organisation which specialises in the transcription of documents specific to Baronies and Manors. Griffin Research is currently in the process of transcribing the documents relating to the former Easton Estate, Suffolk. This estate was made up of numerous manors and was in the possession of the Dukes of Hamilton and Brandon, and the Earls of Rochford before them. By making trascriptions, Griffin Research aim to preserve the content of these documents.
During this century, we aim to expand our database of documents. So much so, that by the surveys' first millenium in 2086, instant authentic documentation covering the 1000 year period is intended to be available to the owner of a Barony or Manor.
Using modern technology, we store and catalogue each document in a safe and secure environment. It is inevitable, that over time the original documents will decay.
Overseas Barony or Manor owners who are seeking to obtain authentic and factual information specific to their Barony or Manor in the United kingdom usually have little option but to recruit a researcher, or to visit the office themselves.
