A Dream of Mermaids: Manatees are large rotund creatures, growing up to 14ft long and up to half a ton in weight, with bristly, jowly face, gentle, peaceful animals, found around the warm springs of Florida. Although Manatee hunting is now illegal, they are still in great danger from mankind in the form of speedboats which use the same area. Many are killed or wounded by whirling propeller blades when they are feeding just below the surface.
