Lorrimer's body was initially discovered at Hoggatt's laboratory by the young, naive 19 year old Brenda Pridmore and now she's stumbled on another horrific murder victim in the disused chapel at Hoggatt's. When Scotland Yard's Adam Dalgliesh and his aide, John Massingham, find her collapsed from fright in the eerie building they take her home to recover, only to discover that the chapel could feature in their enquiries more strongly than they realised and that the numbers on the hymn board could be the key to exposing the killers.
