Sally Jupp's muder is still unsolved. As her funeral takes place, Scotland Yard's Adam Dalgliesh has a list of suspects and most of them are gathered around the girl's graveside. Gossips are pointing the finger at Sally Jupp's loyal village friend Derek Pullen who was caught outside the Maxie house on the night she died.

Adam Dalgliesh wastes little time over the night attack on Deborah Riscoe. Scotland Yard's top murder expert smartly decides the attack was faked to distract and deceive him further ad round curtly on Deborah for wasting his time. Any finer feelings he might have for the Maxie's lovely widowed daughter are cast aside in his frustration with the family.
