A traveller in a country train sees a woman being strangled in another. The witness is Miss Marple's friend and, together, they report the murder to Inspector Slack. He fails to find the body and accuses them of wating police time. The rotting corpse is finally discovered but even Scotland Yard is struck for the identity and motive.
