E. Simmons - Enviroarch

Quality, efficient, professional service for the analysis of environmental samples from archaeological sites.

I provide a specialist consultancy service for the recovery, identification and analysis of charred plant remains.  I am also able to carry out sample processing and preliminary assessment of soil samples for the following classes of palaeoenvironmental material:-

  • Plant macrofossils
  • Fossil pollen
  • Fossil insects
  • Mollusca

Advice is offered on sampling strategies aimed at maximising the recovery of various classes of material.  Samples are processed using appropriate techniques and rapidly assessed, providing an accurate estimate of abundance of material and taxonomic diversity.

Samples from field evaluations are assessed in order to determine the potential of deposits to yield palaeoenvironmental material.  Samples from full excavations are assessed in order to target resources for further analysis at suitable selected samples.

Guide to analysis times of common classes of palaeoenvironmental data:-

Type of material                                                                   Processing             Assessment

Charred plant remians (approx 30 litre sample)       1.5  hours              0.75 hours

Waterlogged plant remains (approx 5 litre sample)  1.5  hours              1 hours

Fossil pollen (16 samples intervals)                        7  hours                 14 hours

All reports are written following guidelines laid out in the English Heritage document Management of Archaeological Projects2 (MAP2)
