BABECO is a Bristol-born and female-led community enterprise working to be empowering, ethical and environmentally aware. We are a limited company, which is not for private profit. This means that any money we make goes back into the business to further our social aims, rather than to shareholders. We pride ourselves in making high quality baby products and constantly strive to find innovative ways to save money and the impact on the environment. We buy manufacturer waste fabric, where we can, to re-use and produce high quality goods. Our wet bags are made from hot air balloon fabric “off- cuts” sourced locally from Cameron Balloons, one of the world leaders in hot air aviation. They are strong, waterproof, durable and cost effective! Our water proof breathable nappy outer fabric (PUL) used in All in One nappy range combines PUL cut offs from around the world with high quality absorbent terry or fleece producing convenient, cute, comfortable nappies! THE PAST In 2001, a group of students and staff from an inner city education centre, Silai for Skills, established a new community venture - the Silai Nappy Company (SNC). This group researched and produced a number of environmentally friendly baby products - a cotton reusable nappy, and accompanying liners, flannels and bags. The nappy and accessories were made in limited quantities, and successfully piloted at a specialist retail outlet (Born) which stocks other brands of reusable nappies largely imported into the Production was suspended whilst the group researched funding avenues, formalised the company structure and appointed a voluntary board of directors in October of 2003. Since that time the project has: · Fundraised to support its re-development as a sustainable community enterprise · Recruited 6 local women to the production team · Developed 26 new products for the environmentally friendly baby market · Begun to retail its goods locally to produce income to support the production staff. · Re-launch
