The first step is to calculate the amount of cooling or heating required. The factors that control the capacity required are as follows: VOLUME OF ROOM (WIDTH X LENGTH X HEIGHT), HEAT GAIN FROM SUNLIGHT THROUGH WINDOWS, HEAT GAIN FROM PEOPLE IN THE ROOM, HEAT GAIN FROM EQUIPMENT INSTALLED IN THE ROOM. As a quick reference guide you can use the following rule of thumb calculation to give you an indication of what would be required in a typical office: Calculate the lenght x width in metres and multiply by 120. This gives you the cooling requirement in watts (divide by 1000 for Kw).
